Parker Masonic Lodge's Chili Cook-Off

Parker Masonic Lodge #142 held its 14th annual Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, April 8th, at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple. Fourteen pots of chili with various “chili” flavors were entered and assigned a number – the number and submitter known only to Right Worshipful Mike Miller. All the chili was very good, but three winners were ultimately selected by the judges – who were Sheriff Tommy Ford of Bay County, Sheriff A. J. Smith from Franklin County and Lt. Paul Beasley, an investigator from the Gulf County Sheriff's Office. Worshipful Joe Wayne Walker won first place. Its a good thing we had unquestionably honest and unbiased judges, as not only is Brother Walker a Bay County School Board member and a member of Parker Lodge, but also was the Chairman of this year's Chili-Cook-Off! Second place was awarded to Worshipful Dale Kiel of Pythagoras Lodge, and Third Place was awarded to Worshipful Master Bill Hartzog of Ira Lindsey, Sr. Lodge. All of the chili was delicious and enjoyed by everyone in attendance. A Traveling Pig trophy was awarded to the Lodge that had the most Brothers, friends and family in attendance. It was close, but Callaway Lodge had the greatest number and will keep the trophy until our Chili Cook-Off next year. Many of our ladies baked pies and cakes that were auctioned off while everyone was still hungry - before everyone filled up on chili. Those auctions are always very entertaining! One of the best highlights was Parker Lodge's presentation to Parker Elementary School's Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Katrina Segrest-Adams was selected by her peers at Parker Elementary School as 2017 Teacher of the Year. To commemorate that fact, and because Parker Lodge adopted Parker Elementary School and adopted a teacher selected by the school; we wanted to honor her for her award and for her dedication to our community's children. She was presented a congratulatory plaque and tickets for dinner for two at Captain Anderson's world famous restaurant. In her comments, Mrs. Segrest-Adams expressed her extreme appreciation for all that the Masons have done and continue doing in the community as well as for Parker Elementary School. Her enthusiasm for teaching and her warm, outgoing personality made it obvious why her peers chose her for this singular honor. She certainly deserves it! This Chili Cook-Off event is a prime example of the camaraderie that is found when Masons, families, friends – and new-found friends - come together for good food and fellowship. Yes, a good time WAS had by all!
